- Blackcurrant fruit profile, coupled with a savoury, nutty complexity from wild fermentation and lees ageing.
- Abstract is a departure from the norm. The vineyard provides the pillar of blackcurrant, passionfruit and its signature minerality, while the 100% wild yeast fermentation in seasoned French oak puncheons offers savoury attraction and complexity in the palate.

Vineyard & Winemaking
|Vineyard||Holdaway Family -Dillons Point|
|Description||This vineyard belongs to the Holdaway family who have been farming in Marlborough since 1864. They practice sustainable viticulture with such things as their own compost and mulching preparations to maintain organic matter in the soil.The soils are fertile and deep but well-drained, with plenty of mineral nutrients which is perfect for Sauvignon. Unusually this parcel is dry-farmed, so the roots go deep, maintaining vigour via the pure underground acquifers.|
|Soil||Alluvial silty soil.|
|Winemaking||Handpicked, whole-bunch pressed and wild fermented in seasoned French oak puncheons (500L). The wine was allowed to ferment naturally with wild yeast and on full solids.|
|Aging||Maturation in these seasoned oak puncheons took place for 15 months on fine less before being bottled without filtration.|
|Bottling date||August 2018|
Sophie Parker-Thomson & Matt Thomson
Sophie is a lawyer by training but she grew up in a family where wine and hospitality ruled supreme. She has been involved in 18 back-to-back Northern and Southern Hemisphere vintages. She is currently studying for the Master of Wine qualification, having completed the WSET Diploma in 2014.
Matt is a biochemist by training and came from a legal family. He has been immersed in European winemaking for 28 years, assisted 55 back-to-back Northern and Southern Hemisphere vintages. Matt has received countless awards and trophies, including International White Winemaker of the Year (IWC 2008) and NZ Winemaker of the Year (WineState).
Blank Canvas is the personal wine range of husband and wife team, Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson. Having completed over fifty back-to-back vintages in both New Zealand and Europe as an award-winning winemaking consultant, Matt together with Sophie felt it was time to create and build a wine brand together, with their first vintage in 2013. Blank Canvas embodies their own expression of art-meets-science with single-vineyard, small batch wines that push the sensory boundaries and challenge winemaking orthodoxy.
